La croissance énorme de la population mondiale est un facteur significatif dans la crise environnementale. La consommation d'énergie, l'utilisation de l'eau, la consommation de nourriture, la pollution, la production de CO2, tout devient plus considérable avec l'augmentation de la population. En plus nous avons la hausse du niveau de vie en Chine et aux Indes qui avec ses deux milliards et demi d'êtres humains fait en sorte que nous utilisons maintenant plus de ressources que la terre est capable d'en produire. Les USA avec 5% de la population mondiale consomment 30% des richesses,le rêve américain pour le reste de la terre est mathematiquement impossible. Il faut gérer la décroissance de manière équitable pour tout le monde, sinon la guerre, la famine, la maladie va s'en charger pour satisfaire l'avidité de l'homme.
